ASTM C-216 Potential Changes

MCAA fights against change in brick void size

The MCAA is currently working to battle plans to change ASTM C-216 to allow for the standard brick to change from a 25% void size to a 30% void. This change can have serious implications for mason contractors. There are many potential issues such as increase use of mortar (in some field cases, significant), increase breakage, chips, etc, increase in water penetration which could lead to shorter life span of the brick and industry confusion and potential code conflicts.

The MCAA is working to try to stop this change as it is currently written. The MCAA needs member help in trying to prevent this from happening. We are asking members to join ASTM and vote on this and other issues that directly impact you in your everyday work. We are also looking for some members to commit to attend an ASTM meeting in December in Atlanta to be present and vote at the next ASTM meeting. Members need not have a tremendous knowledge in the area they just need to understand the issue and give some time to be present to vote. ASTM membership is a small investment ($75) that can have a huge impact on our industry. The MCAA is looking to coordinate our efforts and help answer questions and give guidance to those who would like to take part in the process.
